WRA congratulates Dr. Katie Smith on her latest publication, Surviving on the Edge: Country Mouse, City Mouse…. and Salty Mouse?, in The Wildlife Society’s Wildlife Professional magazine (September/October 2025).

In her article, Katie emphasizes the importance of understanding the salt marsh harvest mouse’s ability to adapt to threats – habitat loss, fragmentation, urbanization, and sea-level rise – when planning for future conservation strategies. She urges environmental conservationists and planners to strongly consider how urbanization and non-native species introductions have changed historical ecological patterns and processes in the San Francisco Bay before they take action. Katie also discusses how the salt marsh harvest mouse is an important indicator species here in the San Francisco Estuary, and notes that their fate and the fate of our own communities are strongly linked in the face of sea-level rise.

If you are a TWS member, you can read the article in the issue of the magazine that was recently delivered to you or by logging into your TWS account (www.wildlife.org) and viewing the PDF online.  Have more questions? Feel free to contact Katie to learn more!
