Each May, WRA team members saddle up to participate in Bay Area’s Team Bike Challenge. The challenge is a great way for employees to gather around a common goal that promotes a healthy lifestyle, team building, time in the outdoors as well as enjoy the simple pleasure of riding a bicycle.
Aligned with WRA’s company values in encouraging employees to reduce their carbon footprint, the company provides paid bonus hours to employees who ride as part of their commute, provides time for rides during lunch hours from company headquarters in San Rafael, and sponsors weekend rides around the Bay Area.
This year, a group of weekend riders traveled to beautiful Healdsburg to enjoy a refreshing ride through Sonoma County wine country, experiencing a number of great wineries in the Dry Creek Valley and 20+ mile ride along quiet scenic country roads. The ride provided an opportunity to share the collective love of cycling outside of regular commutes, and helped riders earn extra points to propel the team in to a podium position for the Team Bike Challenge.
WRA placed third on the leader-board among all middle-sized companies in the Bay Area as well as a third place finish for all companies in Marin County. Collectively, our team of 31 participants pedaled a total of just over 4,000 miles during the month of May. This translates to saving close to 4,000 pounds of CO2, which is approximately the equivalent of just over 200 gallons of gasoline diverted from use in motorized vehicles. These employees also burned an estimated total of 171,914 calories throughout the month, which equals nearly the same amount of calories in 304 McDonald’s “Big Mac” cheeseburgers!
Check out a video produced by two of our riders – Stephanie Freed and Ben Saragusa – of team WRA riding to one of the many sponsored lunches enjoyed throughout the month.
